All components of a single unit are cut on the same flat table in the same moment. Tolerance is reduced to zero, allowing for perfect assembly – a key element of the quality and uniqueness of Falper’s wooden furniture.

Interview with
Valeria de Mateo, Falper

Valeria de Mateo is chief of the sanding and coating department at Falper in Bologna, Italy. Known for their unique design and sustainable footprint, Falper bathroom products are designed to embrace technology while respecting nature. Here, Valeria names her favourite Falper products, and talks to us about job satisfaction and being born into the job.

How did you start at Falper?
I grew up in Campagna and moved to Bologna in 1998. I actually arrived at Falper by chance, to cover maternity leave for one of my colleagues. I started here in the packaging department, then slowly moved to a more hands-on role in product manufacturing. More specifically, this included sanding and spray-painting the wooden elements of our products.

Why Falper?
I have been with the company now for almost 20 years, so Falper feels like a second family to me. I am very passionate about what I do here, especially being surrounded by wood. It’s the smell and tactile feel of wood that makes me feel part of nature. But perhaps more importantly, it invokes a lot of memories of my youth in Campagna. When I was growing up in Campagna, I was constantly surrounded by wood because my family were wood workers. They made all kinds of wooden products – anything from wooden furniture, to doors and window frames.
You could say that working with wood is in my blood.

Can you name some favourite Falper products?
Well, that’s easy. First, is the Via Veneto vanity because it has a very realistic-feeling solid oak skin that feels very natural combined with the smooth soft feeling of Ceramilux.
Secondly, is the Quattro Zero bathtub. How can you not love this product? The shape and the thinness [8 millimeters] of the bathtub make it very unique. Even from a distance, you can tell it’s a Falper bathtub, just from the thin wall alone.

People feel very excited when they use Falper products. How does that make you feel?
In a nutshell, very content. As you can see in the factory, a single product is constructed from different pieces of timber passing through many different hands. Even though it’s initially cut by a machine, it’s meticulously finished by hand – our hands.

What aspects of your work do you find most satisfying?
Knowing that every piece of product that leaves the factory is made with a lot of passion and that it is going to be the crown jewel in someone’s bathroom.

Tell us one thing that people might not know about you.
No comment. A secret is a secret!

Once the individual pieces have been glued, the full piece is assembled. As the glue cures, workers ensure that the assembled product is tightly held together with compression straps to provide a strong bond between the glue and timber.
