When Architects Design Homes for Themselves

Skyline Drive FGR Architects Brutal Architecture 1

Skyline Drive was designed by seasoned architect and director of FGR Architects, Feras Raffoul, as a home for himself in the bustling north-west suburb of Maribyrnong. The imposing structure combines a brutalist and minimalist design philosophy; with an eye towards how the concrete and glass would develop their patinas over time. What resulted is a spacious three-storey home with a focus on the idea that ‘less is more,’ when it comes to luxury. (more…)

The Art of Clean Lines and Cubic Forms – Gallery House by Craig Steere Architects

Perched above Western Australia’s Swan River, on The Avenue in Nedlands, nestles the sun-drenched Gallery House with its distinctly contemporary design of clean lines and cubic forms. Perth-based Craig Steere Architects were enlisted to create the perfect dwelling for a family with four teenage sons, needing to strike the optimal balance between privacy and connectivity. Designed to be elegantly timeless, the house features a dramatic pergola structure extending through the house, tying the series of pavilions together into a fluid home. (more…)

Design Innovators Bring Contemporary Townhouses to Abbotsford

Park & Raphael Abbotsford Kalex 1 with Rogerseller

Abbotsford, Melbourne is hot right now. On the edge of the Yarra River but within strolling distance of bar and restaurant-packed Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond, this sleepy neighbourhood of old workers’ cottages and factories is just a hop from Melbourne’s CBD, but feels a world away.

Seduced by the area’s charms, design-led developer Kalex – helmed by Kyp Bosci – is developing Park & Raphael, a series of 19 ‘secluded yet connected’ luxury townhouses in this emerging quarter.  “This pocket of Melbourne has the best of both worlds,” says Bosci. “On the one hand it is secluded – nestled amid parkland – and on the other it’s connected to the CBD, the inner north and the city’s entertainment precincts. That’s something unique in Melbourne and only Abbotsford can offer.”
